What was hiding in limestone?
Treasure Caves
Natural and manmade caverns in the limestone and sandstone bluffs along the Straight River provided an ideal climate for products which required aging. The first of these was beer, with breweries founded by the Fleckenstein family, among others in the area. When Godfrey Fleckenstein gave up his own production to join his brother, Ernst, his brewery (left) became the site of various enterprises until purchased by Felix Frederiksen in 1936.
Frederiksen founded the Treasure Cave Cheese Company, manufacturing and storing blue cheese in the caves that he expanded to be 19 feet high, 15 feet wide and about 1000 feet long.
