Civic and School Life
At the turn of the century, a local promoter gave Faribault the nickname “Athens of the West,” referring to the variety of civic and educational opportunities the city offered. Four Episcopal schools were established in the town, culminating today in Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The Minnesota legislature also granted three state schools to Faribault, offering education to deaf, blind, and developmentally disabled students. Impressive public buildings and events which celebrated community achievements invoked civic pride for city leaders and citizens.
